History

Sherborne was named scir burne by the Saxon inhabitants meaning "clear stream". The town was made the capital of Wessex, one of the seven Saxon kingdoms of England, and King Alfred's elder brothers King Ethelbert and King Ethelbald are buried in the abbey. Sherborne is located at the edge of the Blackmoor Vale the oldest inhabited part of Europe with over 6,000 years of documented inhabitation.

In 1750 when I believe the cottage was built George II was on the throne and the American colonies were a quarter of a century away from rebellion. Dorset has a rich history and a vibrant present. There is a wealth of wonderful local produce and more fantastic scenery than you can shake the proverbial stick at!

Please view my Links page to see just a small selection of the places I recommend you visit, but rest assured a visit to Rose Cottage and Sherborne will leave you relaxed and enriched.
